Why Leather Shoe Care Matters

Leather is a natural material that reacts to a variety of factors—sunlight, moisture, dirt, time— to name a few. Without proper care, it can dry out, crack, lose its shape, or fade. With a few simple habits, you will ensure that investment pays off for decades.

Benefits of regular care include:

  • Longer lifespan for your shoes
  • Richer, more beautiful color over time
  • Better fit and comfort
  • Preserved shape and structure

Regular maintenance isn’t about keeping your shoes perfect—it’s about helping them age well.

Five-Step Guide to Leather Shoe Care

Note: This is for regular leather, not suede. For suede jump to this guide.

Follow each step. First is the instructions, immediately below is the rationale for each step.

  1. Clean any dirt, debris, and dust off with a horsehair brush.  If there is more dirt or dust use a slightly damp, soft cloth. You can repeat this again if your shoes are more dirty.
    • This gives us a clean slate to work with, and no worries of scuffing the leather, or smearing dirt around during the next step. Dirt and dust also pull moisture out of the leather.
  1. Air dry the shoes at room temperature. Avoid placing them in sunlight or near a heat source. Patience is your friend.
    • Sunlight can cause color changes in leather, uneven drying, and possibly deforming parts of the shoe. This is more true if you got them a little wet or damp.
  1. Condition the leather (our favorites in an Amazon list here) to moisturize the fibers. These can have many names: lotion, conditioner, or cream are the most common. Apply a small amount to the shoe, working in sections, and rub it in with a clean, soft cloth. Allow some time for the leather to soak in the conditioner, some sections might be drier than others.
    • This keeps the leather supple, allowing better motion and less creasing. It also helps develop richer color and tone in the leather over time.
  1. Polish the leather with a matching color or clear wax. Apply a coat in a small area using an applicator brush.
Then use a larger brush to remove excess polish, while creating a barrier on top of the leather.
Last, use a soft cloth and buff the polish to your desired shine.
    • This protects the leather by creating a barrier that keeps dust off the leather underneath. It also helps the shoes look crisp and clean.
  1. Store shoes in a cool, dry place using shoe trees. If the area is prone to collecting dust, place them in a natural fiber bag that can breathe, like the ones included with your purchase.
    • This makes sure your shoes are ready to go when you need to look your best.

How Often Should You Care for Your Leather Shoes?

Think of leather shoe care as a rhythm, not a chore. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • After Each Wear: Brush off dirt and use cedar shoe trees
  • Once a Month: Clean and condition * this frequency depends on wear. If you don't wear them a lot, once or twice a year is fine.

Summary: A Few Habits Go a Long Way

When you invest in handcrafted shoes, you’re stepping into timeless craftsmanship. With a few simple habits, you can extend the life and beauty of your leather shoes for years to come.

Quick Tips:

  • Brushing off dirt after each wear helps a lot—it’s the smallest amount of work with the biggest payoff.
